In some cases, Xeljanz may even cause death.<sup>1<\/sup><br><br>If you or a loved one have used Xeljanz, you should speak with a healthcare professional to see if you have developed any of the health problems listed by the FDA.\n<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-health-dangers-of-xeljanz\">What You Need to Know About the Health Dangers of Xeljanz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR are arthritis medications manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. They are known as Janus kinase inhibitor-class drugs<sup>2<\/sup>. The only difference between Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR is how long their effects last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR are used to treat conditions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rheumatoid arthritis<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"pl-4\">Rheumatoid arthritis is inflammation of the joints, especially the hands and feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>Psoriatic arthritis<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"pl-4\">Psoriatic arthritis is inflammation that affects people with the skin condition psoriasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong><strong>Juvenile idiopathic arthritis<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"pl-4\">Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is a type of joint pain and inflammation affecting teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong><strong><strong>Ulcerative colitis<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"pl-4\">Ulcerative colitis is a disease causing inflammation in the digestive tract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These medicines have other uses, too, but are primarily designed to control and alleviate the symptoms of arthritides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1430\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.justinian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/What-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-Health-Dangers-of-Xeljanz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.justinian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/What-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-Health-Dangers-of-Xeljanz.jpg 1430w, https:\/\/www.justinian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/What-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-Health-Dangers-of-Xeljanz-540x193.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.justinian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/What-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-Health-Dangers-of-Xeljanz-768x274.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.justinian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/What-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-Health-Dangers-of-Xeljanz-18x6.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1430px) 100vw, 1430px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-health-problems-of-the-immune-system\"><strong>Health Problems of the Immune System<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conditions like arthritis and ulcerative colitis are often caused in part by an overactive immune system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, people who have rheumatoid arthritis produce more cytokine proteins (used to fight infection) than the body needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>When this happens, the immune system may begin working against the body, sending cytokines to attack connective tissues.<\/strong><\/strong><sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what causes the inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-xeljanz-works\"><strong><strong>How Xeljanz Works<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Xeljanz helps moderate the body\u2019s immune response by limiting the proteins\u2019 ability to send signals to the body. This helps prevent or reduce the inflammation and flare-ups of arthritis.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-problem-with-xeljanz\"><strong><strong><strong>The Problem with Xeljanz<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR were first approved for use in the United States in 2012 and 2017, respectively.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-dark-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-however-experts-have-long-had-concerns-about-their-safety\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>However, experts have long had concerns about their safety.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration let Pfizer begin selling Xeljanz, it required that the medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2018\/203214s018lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feature labels warning consumers of its potential to cause serious injury and death<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>After Xeljanz was approved, the F.D.A. instructed Pfizer to continue reporting safety data.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This data was monitored and cross-checked by the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-dark-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-the-dangers-of-xeljanz-were-discovered-by-an-fda-health-study\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>The dangers of Xeljanz were discovered by an FDA health study<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the F.D.A. performed a randomized, large-scale analysis of Pfizer\u2019s post-marketing clinical safety data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong><strong>The data from the FDA\u2019s study showed that trial participants treated with Xeljanz were more likely to experience \u201cheart-related events\u201d compared to people who are treated with conventional tumor necrosis inhibitors.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-dark-blue-color has-text-color\" issued <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-requires-warnings-about-increased-risk-serious-heart-related-events-cancer-blood-clots-and-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>another, more comprehensive report<\/strong><\/a><strong> outlining the potential dangers of Xeljanz.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA report on Xeljanz advises that people who take the drug are at higher risk of experiencing heart problems including, but not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heart attack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carrera<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blood clots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Muerte<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"border-bottom:0px;background-color:#f8f8f8;padding:20px\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><h5>The F.D.A\u2019s most recent warning suggests that people who take 10 mg of Xeljanz or Xeljanz XR twice per day are more likely to develop pulmonary embolisms. <\/h5>Pulmonary embolisms are a type of blood clot in the lungs that can be fatal.\n<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-dark-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-however-even-people-who-take-lower-doses-of-xeljanz-or-xeljanz-xr-are-still-at-higher-risk-for-heart-related-problems-than-patients-taking-other-types-of-medication\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>However, even people who take lower doses of Xeljanz or Xeljanz XR are still at higher risk for heart-related problems than patients taking other types of medication.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fda-warnings-about-the-dangers-of-the-arthritis-medication-xeljanz\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>FDA warnings about the dangers of the arthritis medication Xeljanz.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The F.D.A.s\u2019 warning applies to everyone who has taken or continues to take any of the following drugs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Xeljanz (Pfizer)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Xeljanz XR (Pfizer)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Olumiant (Eli Lilly and Company)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rinvoq (AbbVie)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-determining-your-risk-before-taking-the-arthritis-medication-xeljanz\"><strong><strong>Determining Your Risk Before Taking the Arthritis Medication Xeljanz<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people who take Xeljanz or Xeljanz XR will never experience any noticeable side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong><strong><strong>However, no two people react to any medication the exact same way.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Xeljanz\u2019s most dangerous side-effects are heart-related, and they may not be noticeable until it is too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-while-it-is-difficult-to-predict-who-will-experience-heart-related-problems-after-taking-xeljanz-the-f-d-a-has-advised-extreme-caution-for-anyone-who\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>While it is difficult to predict who will experience heart-related problems after taking Xeljanz, the F.D.A. has advised extreme caution for anyone who:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Smokes or used to smoke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has had a heart attack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With a history of other heart problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has suffered strokes or needed treatment for blood clots<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"border-bottom:0px;background-color:#f8f8f8;padding:20px\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>If you fall into one of the F.D.A.\u2019s high-risk categories, you should ask your physician to consider alternatives to Xeljanz. prescribed Xeljanz, hoping it would help relieve their chronic pain.
