Crying, clenching their fists, rubbing their eyes, and <strong>lip smacking<\/strong> are just a few of their many signals to tell their caregivers they may need something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-many-babies-smack-their-lips-but-when-combined-with-other-symptoms-it-could-indicate-autism\">Many babies smack their lips; but when combined with other symptoms, it could indicate autism.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your baby is a lip smacker, there is usually no cause for concern. It could mean your baby is hungry, sleepy, teething, ready to try solid food, or just having some fun, among other things. However, very rarely, lip smacking can be a sign of something more serious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those things, when it is combined with other behaviors such as poor eye contact or continually repeated behaviors, is autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Lip smacking can also be associated with certain types of seizures or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you are noticing your baby\u2019s lip smacking in combination with other signs of concern, this is the time to consult your pediatrician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-autism\">What is Autism?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability, and scientists believe there are many causes. It generally appears before the age of three years, and the symptoms and abilities of people with ASD vary widely. One study that took place in 2019 showed that toddlers diagnosed with ASD made fewer gestures (I.e., pointing, waving, imitating) than their peers with typical development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-symptoms-include\">Other symptoms include:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Delayed language<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delayed cognitive or learning skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No facial expressions, such as showing they\u2019re&nbsp; happy, sad, surprised, or angry, by nine months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual reactions to sounds, tastes, smells, or touching objects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obsessive interests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors and mental health professionals use behavioral and developmental cues to make an ASD diagnosis. There is no cure. <strong>Early diagnosis and treatment are important for addressing an individual\u2019s needs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-possible-causes-of-asd\">Possible causes of ASD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 44 eight-year-old children have been diagnosed with ASD (2018 data). Boys are four times more likely to receive a diagnosis than girls. It occurs within all socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-risk-factors-for-asd\">Risk factors for ASD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-certain-risk-factors-may-increase-the-likelihood-of-having-a-child-with-autism-spectrum-disorder-asd\">Certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain risk factors \u2014 genetic, biological, and environmental \u2014 have been associated with ASD, according to the CDC. Some of those include having certain chromosomal or genetic conditions, having older parents, having a sibling with ASD or experiencing omplications at birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-acetaminophen\">Acetaminophen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-acetaminophen-use-during-pregnancy-contribute-to-the-development-of-autism\">Does acetaminophen use during pregnancy contribute to the development of autism?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Research has drawn a connection between prenatal use of acetaminophen (Tylenol\u00ae \/ Paracetamol) and a child\u2019s brain development. <sup>1 2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-raising-the-alarm-on-acetaminophen-use-during-pregnancy\">Raising the alarm on acetaminophen use during pregnancy:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Nature Reviews (2021):<\/span> A group of \u201cscientists, medical experts and public health professionals\u201d published a \u201ccall for precautionary action\u201d demanding that that pregnant women not take acetaminophen (Tylenol\u00ae and similar products with acetaminophen as an active ingredient) unless given it by a doctor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 border-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-we-recommend-that-women-be-counseled-prior-to-or-early-in-pregnancy-with-the-following-guidance\"><strong>\u201cWe recommend that women be counseled prior to or early in pregnancy with the following guidance:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pregnant women should forego [acetaminophen] use unless medically indicated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pregnant women should consult with their physician or pharmacist if they are uncertain whether [acetaminophen] use is indicated and before using on a long-term basis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pregnant women should minimize risk by using the lowest effective [acetaminophen] dose for the shortest possible time.<sub><sup>3<\/sup><\/sub><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Many studies have connected prenatal consumption of acetaminophen with fetal development of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns p-4 border-column is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-exposure-to-acetaminophen-during-gestation-may-increase-symptoms-of-autism-spectrum-disorder-in-male-children-and-hyperactivity-impulsivity-behaviors-for-all-children-4\">Exposure to acetaminophen during gestation \u201cmay increase symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder in male children\u2026 [and] hyperactivity \/ impulsivity behaviors for all children.\u201d <sup>4<\/sup><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns p-4 has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#f8f8f8\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-acetaminophen-is-an-active-ingredient-in-more-than-600-medications-used-to-relieve-mild-to-moderate-pain-and-reduce-fever-5\">\u201cAcetaminophen is an active ingredient in \u201cmore than 600 medications used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever.\u201d <sup>5<\/sup><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child is diagnosed with a developmental disorder like autism spectrum disorder, doctors, researchers and the CDC generally recommend therapeutic intervention as early as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-heavy-metals-and-autism\">Heavy metals and autism?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized img-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"h-health-studies-show-that-excesses-of-certain-heavy-metals-may-be-related-to-developmental-disorders-like-autism-spectrum-disorder-asd\">Health studies show that excesses of certain heavy metals may be related to developmental disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to risk factors, several scientific reports have linked the ingestion of dangerous levels of some metals to ASD. A 2021 report by the U.S. House of Representatives titled \u201cBaby Foods are Associated with Dangerous Levels of Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury\u201d found that the following baby food brands had elevated levels of metals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nurture (HappyBABY)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hain (Earth\u2019s Best Organic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beech-Nut<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gerber<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walmart (Parent\u2019s Choice and Parent\u2019s Choice Organic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprout Organic Foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campbell (Plum Organics)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The report included the following statements: \u201cAccording to internal company documents and test results obtained by the Subcommittee, commercial baby foods are tainted with significant levels of toxic heavy metals, including arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. Exposure to toxic heavy metals causes permanent decreases in IQ, diminished future economic productivity, and increased risk of future criminal and antisocial behavior in children. Toxic heavy metals endanger infant neurological development and long-term brain function.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2021-02-04%20ECP%20Baby%20Food%20Staff%20Report.pdf\">See the full report here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-journal-of-toxicology-and-other-health-studies-on-heavy-metals-and-autism\">Journal of Toxicology and other health studies on heavy metals and autism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other scientific reports, such as a study published in the <em>Journal of Toxicology<\/em> in 2009<\/strong>, have linked the presence of metals in the body to ASD. This report found \u201cmultiple significant correlations of severity of autism and the urinary excretion of toxic metals, such that a higher body burden of toxic metals was associated with more severe autistic symptoms.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup> There have also been several consumer groups that have tried to warn about the dangers of metals in baby foods due to environmental factors such as soil, water, and pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-my-child-ate-baby-foods-with-high-levels-of-metals\">What if my child ate baby foods with high levels of metals?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child has been diagnosed with ASD after consuming baby foods \u2014 particularly from those companies named in the U.S. House of Representatives Report, you may have cause for a personal injury lawsuit.
